Multiple problems with Searching for messages: Looking for messages with same sender / subject #247

I'm using Nostalgy Version 4.1.2 Thunderbird 115.5.0 (64-bit) MacOS Sonoma 14.1.1 (23B81)

First, thank you for maintaining this Add-On. It provides huge benefits for my workflow. Regarding the "q" key for quick filtering messages: I see some posts about it but my problems are different in some ways than what I see in the recent posts. Note that I am still using the old " ` " key, since i have it on my keyboard, but changing the key designation to "q" doesn't make a difference.

The problems are:

  1. When I first press " ` ", it does the right thing, i.e., it quick filters all messages with the same sender as the message that his highlighted (and in Sent folders, it quick filters by the same recipient).
  2. In the past, pressing " " a second time would then quick filter all messages with the same subject line. Now, this does not happen. In other words, nothing happens when I press " ".
  3. As reported before, esc does not clear the quick filter. I understand this issue is known and a fix is in the works (correct?).
  4. To clear the quick filter, I go into the quick filter dialog box (or press shift - cmd - k), and hit esc. All messages are then displayed again. However, the " " key doesn't work. Pressing it does nothing, even if I am focused on the message pane. To get the " " key to work again, I need to move to another folder and the use it there. Or, I "cmd tab" to another application, then "cmd tab" back to Thunderbird. Now it works.

In writing this message I discovered a "fix" to issue #2. If I hit "cmd tab" twice (to go out of TB, then back to TB), pressing the " ` " key now causes the quick filter to filter by subject.

I can then "cmd tab" out of TB and back to TB again, press " ` " and all messages area displayed.

So.... " ` " works like before but only if you switch out of TB, then back to TB again

Thanks for helping solve this!

this is not supported yet, please use my addon quicker quicksearch which does the same with a different letter combination

Interesting workaround for the "`" key issue. This is the same workaround that can be used when default save folder is not displayed in the lower right corner (simultaneously, keys like S, B and C do not work). cmd tab twice and the default folder will get displayed and keys will work again.

I was also struggling with malfunctioning keyboard shortcuts in Nostalgy on the new Thunderbird... Thus, I just finished a simple extension quickfilter-kbd (in compliance with the newest Thunderbird v3 manifest) that implements keyboard shortcuts for quick-filtering messages by sender, subject, or recipient. This together with the extension Move messages and yourself that implements keyboard shortcuts for searching folders and moving messages into them (plus skipping between them) completes my workflow (however, without Nostalgy). Perhaps something like this is useful for you, too?
