When narrowing a window, text disappears

Start with a wide window then narrow it to mobile proportions and everything disappears except a load of rubbish stuff clashing all over each other.

Similarly widening a narrow window on the search results page leaves most columns blank.

I assume we fix this by removing all responsiveness from the backend and get it all working in the frontend.

Does branch feature/updating-homepage fix this? And why is the branch broken?
