Chromecast static background noise #100

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Power on TV, input is already set to correct HDMI port used by chromecast
2. Chrome cast boots - Powered from TV USB
3. Cast a chrome tab - Static noise begins

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Static sound begins while casting a chrome tab, along with the regular sound
played from the webpage. Static noise continues after tab cast is terminated.
Static noise continues even upon muting the TV sound.

Static noise can be stopped by shuffling through the TV input to return to the
HDMI port used by chromecast. The noise will no longer be present until
powering down chromecast.

Powering chromecast through AC adapter will not create the static noise issue.

Static noise is not present upon casting youtube video under the stated
conditions (USB Power / HDMI input already selected when powering on TV).

I also have had this same problem with the static upon casting a tab. I'd like
to add that it even happens when casting a tab without sound. It does not
happen with AC adapter power.

TV is a DYNEX and USB is labeled "service port", if that helps narrow problems
down.

Thank you for your support of Chromecast. We've just released a major update
to the Google Cast SDK and will be closing your issue.

Take a look at http://googledevelopers.blogspot.com/ for more information.

I still have this issue and I only bought my Chromecast 3 weeks ago. This issue
is NOT obsolete.

hello, i have the same issue, static noise. i only ever powered my chromecast
via provided AC adapter. however with mine, the static ONLY comes through when
i'm playing sounds. i can hear the normal sound in the background, but the
crackling and high pitched screeching is very loud. it stops if i pause the
media (video or music), and i have no problems viewing pictures or videos with
no sound.

I finally solved this by interposing a 3m HDMI extension between the Chromecast
and the TV. It needs to be a good quality cable though - a cheaper, shorter one
did not work. In my case the TV must be emitting a signal that interferes with
the Chromecast, and the effect seems to occur up to 2 metres from the HDMI card
socket. I would respectfully suggest that Google look at the shielding on the
device and check that any compensation / filtering of unwanted signals is
working 100%.

Hmm i'm going to try that. but i've used my chromecast device with the same
TV for just over a year with no problem at all and its only started making the
noises a week ago. what could have changed?

Just got the same issue here. Really annoying..

After careful troubleshooting I have isolated the issue to the Chromecast
device powered via the TV usb port. The static exists irrespective of the
signal source, however gets worse as the chromecast device heats up. Supplying
power from an AC adapter reswolves the problem.

issue still exists and no solution can be found in any discussion groups. I
have attempted all suggestions.
- Have tried powering via AC adapter and via USB
- Have tried extension cable to move chromecast unit away from TV
- Have tried horizontal and vertical HDMI ports
- Have tried cycling through all the input ports on the TV
- Have tried updating the software on the chromecast
- Confirmed that this Chromecast unit works on a different TV
- Confirmed that HDMI port on TV works with other devices
Nothing seems to work and I continue to get snow and static when Chromecast is
connected (regardless of whether casting or not)

I have two devices and only the latest one acquired few weeks ago has this
popping sound issue. The old one (a year ago) doesn't have this issue. Both are
running the same sw version.

Having this issue with a Chromecast I purchased November 2014. I can confirm
the same as comment 10 that this happens when powered by external supply or the
TV USB, I have tried a quality HDMI cable as well to no avail.

It seems very much to be connected to RF noise created by the CC's wifi. As I
tend to notice more static and noise when it is communicating to the network
than when it is idle.
