I still think you're discounting wireless communications too much. Fixed point wireless links (with dish antennas) can easily reach well over 100Mbps, and are considered reliable enough for some "backhaul" type applications. I think it may be possible to eliminate the cable connection entirely, while still maintaining reliability.
Other than this, I would prefer an optical cable if necessary. Using two separate power supplies is not an issue, and the launch pad should be smart enough to disable itself if the link is lost or disrupted.
@gjsmo @sbergested Can you guys read the doc and select the design you like?
