Synchronize Master with development in Common #37

Apparently there's a bunch of development that's taken place in the other branch that I never merged.

Closes #15 (basic goal is met, needs newer issues to track the additional behavior)

Doesn't close any other issues atm, they're too useful as task tracking right now, but I need to actually do some housekeeping and get things cleared up.
