There are many administrative borders already in OSM. The problem with a global app is that in each country their meaning is different. You can check more details here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:boundary%3Dadministrative
The plan is to properly render them, of course.
One thing I don’t know if OSM provides or not is municipal boundaries such as county boundaries, and city limits. It would make locating stuff a whole lot easier. The other day I was trying to find a gas station that was in the county just north of me. Already knew it was just north of the county line but didn’t have a clue of what county I was looking at. I had already gotten fair idea of just where it was in Google Maps, but in OM it was a guesstimate at best. The same for city limits. A couple of years ago I got a speeding ticket at a speed trap at the edge of a hick town in Georgia. The GPS I was using at the time showed me the city name but not its weird city limits boundaries. That might be a good addition when you travel. Have OM inform you that you’ve just crossed a county boundary and show you the distance to the nearest city on your route. A lot of the time county’s already do this with a sign saying how far away from the county seat you are. It could have saved me about $187 US dollars a few years back.
