Marina icon should follow other transport with blue and square #6303

Marina is a transport hub and like the rest it should be blue and squared:

It is currently using this icon:

I would propose this one instead:

It is neutral (not only sailing) and is blue and squared.

And later we can repurpose the icon for Sailing Clubs and Schools and similars:

This comes in continuation to previusly closed issue #4819

makes sense to me, the proposed icon looks good 👍️

Misalf-git commented 9 months ago

Same for me. Anchor looks good.

Looks good!

Opinions? Shall we go ahead?

I think that's a bad idea, a marina is not for public transport, but for private boats. So I wouldn't use the blue colour.

I was thinking about it too. But we had blue squared parkings which are for private vehicles. Rental bicycles are for private individuals. Helipads could be private easily... And marinas are used for mooring public transport boats also (ferries, leisure tour boats...).

So for me a blue square background looks fine. An alternative would be to use a style similar to current parkings P (in case we want to emphasize only the private function of marinas).

You have a fair argument and I was giving it second thoughts.

There are plenty of airports that are private and ports or marinas are their equivalent, so I would rationally think they should be similar.

Regarding style and intuition this seems good in my opinion.

Another point is that these icons will appear over the sea or close to the coast and won't be therefor near other public transport equivalents. So they won't be mixed up, etc.

leisure=marina is not for public transport. I think that river or maritime transport is always mapped with amenity=ferry_terminal, even a small raft that carries few vehicles and crosses a river where there is no bridge.

But, I remember seeing in the road the rectangular blue boxes with a white boat inside to represent them, just like the airport is rectangular blue with a white plane.

Here with their equivalent alternatives added.

I do still see it in blue square a better proposal than the others for these reasons:

This would be the icon for harbor as well (which I believe we don't have it rendered yet)

@organicmaps/design WDYT?

Another thought: An anchor is not a good icon for a marina as boats almost never use an anchor when they are in a harbour.

This is how marinas are dislpayed in navionix (popular proprietary map for sailors): signal-2023-12-02-121505

An anchor is not a good icon for a marina as boats almost never use an anchor when they are in a harbour.

While you're likely correct (I'm not a sailor) in that anchors are almost never used, isn't it still universally recognized as a symbol for sailing / boats / ships?

Also I'd guess that sails aren't set in a harbour either.
