Escape lanes for large road & motorway tunnels

For large roads and motorways, it would be super cool if there were escape tunnels either side.

Inside the tunnel, there would be occasional green emergency exit door (every mile? basically a rarely appearing prop), for example:

Bonus points: For large roads, which have pavements, the road tunnel could include two additional tunnels either side for pedestrian use (and give appearance that those are what's used as escape tunnels):

FYI, I have a 1.5 km motorway tunnel through a mountain which is what got me thinking of this stuff. When driving through the tunnel it seems never-ending, but the inside of the tunnel is basically the same the whole route.
