I have a device with a dedicated search button so it's easy for me - but I plan
to continue to use KPD even when I change devices - even if the device has no
dedicated keys.
@OP: This might be moot b/c ICS has the ability to create those same dedicated
keys (buttons) on devices that do not have them, so for Brian to add them for
older devices may or may not make sense. Just letting you know.

I have a Galaxy Nexus. So I'm running ICS and there is no Search button on that
and there is already an add group button. And space next to it for a search
button

Huh? According to
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/01/03/how-to-change-your-galaxy-nexus-soft-keys-t
o-customized-colors-or-versions/ it has softkeys at the bottom same as my
phone's hard keys. That's what I use for search all the time...
Did you turn yours off or something? Or are you running a ROM that has
FullScreen Toggle enabled?

It has
1) Back
2) Home
3) App switcher
4) And if the app do not have a Menu key, then it will add that.
My guess is that his guide with the root stuff and all will add the search
button.

And what comes up under the 3 vertical dots on the far right when you press it?

That's the menu button that is only there if the program do not have a menu
button it self.

Ahh, so in app the softkeys change. Which means that the normally showing
search key does not show.
I think it would be easier for him to update the code to meet ICS's standards
to show the normal softkeys then....
Because on my device that would be like having 2 search keys, since I have the
hardware keys in place already....
Would that be acceptable to you?

No as I said in the post with the picture.
It has 3 (1, 2 and 3) buttons and if the program do not have a menu button it
will make button 4 that is the menu button.

I quick search on "ICS search button" and you get
"....you have to root your phone (which isn't hard), flash a custom recovery
image..."
"....Requirements:
A rooted Galaxy Nexus. See our guide on rooting the Galaxy Nexus.
ClockworkMod recovery installed. See our guide on installing ClockworkMod
recovery 5 on the Galaxy Nexus."
So basic. If you want a search button then you have to root your phone (Not the
same as just installing a new ROM) and then also install a new ROM.
So not anything a normal user will have.

So, there is never a search button in any app at all? Makes very little sense
- why would there be a search button only when you're on the default home
screen?
I need to look into this more....something is not right.

It is not on the default home screen.
It is never there!
The only way to get one is by rooting your device and adding a custom ROM.
On the home screen you have a search bar one every home screen. so you do not
need a search button at the home screen.

The picture you linked to is from a guy that has Rooted and Installed a custom
ROM that has added a Search key himself.

Niraj I just toke two screenshots of the stock music player and notice the
search button in them.
They are not a part of the buttons in the bottom. But a part of the program.
