README: Enable Markdown

Renaming the README to have a .md extension enables markdown support on GitHub.

This allows for

better rendering for visitors of the project
including images (e.g., for CI in upcoming PRs)

@pnorbert can we merge this (markdown support) and then add continuous integration?
