It never happened to use them.... probably it is not the most convenient way to abstract hardware interfaces.
I don't recall ever seeing a patch on them, or any questions over the years. No problem here with removing them.
The Orocos Device Interface classes in rtt/extras/dev have not been updated for a long time, with the exception of minor bug fixes or patches required for the transition from RTT v1 to v2 in 2010. There is some old documentation in doc/xml/orocos-device-interface.xml.
I wonder whether somebody is actually using it or whether they can be completely removed?
Some of the source files in this directory, e.g. rtt/extras/dev/AxisInterface.hpp have an incompatible LGPL license header. It might be by mistake, but we do not know anymore.
264 already disabled compilation of the Orocos Device Interface classes by default.
