I actually prefer the plain GitHub/Jekyll/PR to any third-party CMS. In my opinion, CMS adds extract layer of complication...

I see both sides of the argument, can they co-exist?

They should coexist in the context of netlify, because netlify cms is just an interface on top of github repositories. It is a layer on top that allows to do both approaches.
