Hey, Just noticed you're getting started with your MSI Hackintosh. I built my GL72M 7RDX not too long ago and thought I'd point you to it if it helps you at all.

I'd suggest buying a cheap Broadcom wifi card off eBay and swapping it out. Makes for a lot less headache. I'd suggest trying to go the vanilla install route instead of using Niresh's tools. Most of those tools are just shortcuts that you end up paying for in the end. If you have any other questions, just let me know. I struggled for a long time trying to get mine functional, as not a lot of people have done MSI Hackintosh builds. So hopefully my build can help you along the way.

oscarrock commented 5 years ago

Hey @jbwharris. Thanks for your message. Yeah probably i will end up buying a wifi card. And also i will start a new installation with a vainilla osx. I will follow your repo to see if i can finished up this MSI lap. Really appreciate your advices, ill let you know how everithing goes!

i ordered MSI GF63 Thin Core i7 9th Gen - (8 GB/512 GB SSD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics) GF63 Thin 9SC-460IN

anything that i should know before proceeding with hackintosh installation? i have never tried hackintosh and MacOS but need it now for development. if i can use externan wifi usb dongle for wifi connection then thats fine for me. also can i dual boot it with windows 10? i will use seperate harddisk for dual boot, but dual boot come later.

@jbwharris Any update regarding fix for random reboots? Also is there a chance of hardware damage while using Hackintosh?

Also, please guide me to the installation process, I'm new here. Thanks in advance

Usually not an issue with any hardware damage when doing hackintosh unless you are doing any type of modding (replacing bios chips, wiring, etc) which isn't needed. Hackintosh is usually just a software setup.

I am also interested in finding out if the random reboots have been solved. i am actually thinking of getting an MSI GF63 9SC-257 Thin in the next few days. Have experience with Hackintosh with desktop and laptop. Hoping the issues with the random restarts have been resolved as well.

jbwharris commented 4 years ago

@arvindverma777 @cm0270 I can't say I have a huge problem with random reboots. I have had them happen, but I can't say with much frequency. I was mucking around with converting from Clover to OpenCore awhile back, but still need to do some work. I found this repo for a GL62M 7RD, which is very close in model to my own, so I was using that as a starting point and working backwards.

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

Haven’t used opencore before. Always used clover. Might be settings in opencore or something causing it. Did you get the restarts with clover? When I get the laptop, if I can due to some issue at work, will try it with clover. I have successfully used clover to get 2 other older MSI laptops with Haswell chips up on Mojave but not Catalina. Catalina wouldn’t boot without usb drive hooked up whereas Mojave booted up just fine and was stable with everything working.

oscarrock commented 4 years ago

@jbwharris, @cm0270. I stopped using hackintosh on this laptop becouse those random reboots are very dangerous. SURE YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR LAPTOP. The SO controlls all temperature, voltage and many other stuff that surely can break you lap. So think the focus to be able to fix them is patching the power management. @cm0270 can you share us your EFI folder for that success mojave?

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

I was able to upload the EFI folder here. It was for an MSI CX61 2QC-1654US Gaming Laptop 4th Generation Intel Core i5 4210M (2.6 GHz) 16gb DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce 920M. It also worked on an MSI Leopard Pro 480 2QF as well that had an i7-4720hq and 950M Nvidia. Both of these laptops worked with the FaceTime and iMessages as well. I know on the Leopard Pro 486 the SD card was working as well. But I just sold that laptop a few days ago for $500 and was looking at getting the MSI Thin 9sc-257 with the i5-9300h and 1650 Max-Q.

On both of these laptops I used the Olarila Mojave image which automatically disabled the discrete GPU's and the laptops were running only on the Intel HD 4600 graphics.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/qtv0h3hs5yhbl45/EFI.zip/file

oscarrock... why did you think the random restarting was hurting the laptop? hardware issues, heat issues, etc? I never ran into any of those problems with the other 2 MSI laptops I have hacked.

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

@oscarrock

I was wondering if the issue with the random restarts had something to do with the NVMe brand installed. Looks like these come with Toshiba drives in them. I wonder if the Samsung would do better or not. I have run hackintosh on desktop with both Samsung and Inland Premium NVMe drives and have not had any issues at all. I have heard that it can be the NVMe drive brand, etc. that can cause a random restart issue.

jbwharris commented 4 years ago

My main SSD is a Western Digital, if that factors into anything.

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

Can anyone upload an EFI folder and a list of for sure settings in the BIOS? I can't seem to get this to install whatsoever. Get to the MacOS Install screen but getting error when trying to install it. I have tried Niresh Mojave, Tonymac and Olarila versions with no luck.

Getting this error:

MacOS could not be installed on your computer. An error occurred installing OS X. To use Apple Diagnostics to check your hardware, shut down, pressing the power button and immediately holding the "D" key until diagnostics begins. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

@oscarrock

For the life of me I cannot get it to boot without USB. The drive won't even show up when I hit F11 unless it is in Legacy mode and not UEFI or UEFI with CSM.

How did you manage to get this working? I have had experience as stated with MSI laptops but this one is driving me crazy. lol. The older laptop with Haswell I was able to use UEFI mode but some reason with the Thin 9sc it is giving me problems. Tried Legacy as well. Also using the Niresh Mojave to do the install.

Even placing the EFI folder you have uploaded into the drive after install isn't doing any good either.

Also for working Ethernet use the AtherosE2200Ethernet-V2.2.2 kext file and place in Other folder in Clover. That got my ethernet up and working. Ordered a wifi card for hackintosh.

Still working on HD 630 graphics.

Thanks for any help.

MSI-GF63-Thin-9SC-257

MSI GF63 Thin 9SC-257 Laptop i5-9300H GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q

MacOS Catalina 10.15.3 Kingston NVMe 512gb (Windows 10) Samsung 860 Evo 1tb SSD (MacOS Catalina 10.15.3)

EFI folder can be found here: https://github.com/cm0270/MSI-GF63-Thin-9SC-257/edit/master/README.md

Setup as MacBook Pro 15,2

Clover 5103 is the current Clover boot loader.

Config.plist has been edited and had serial number removed.

This took a bit to setup. Tried various USB installers (Tonymac, Olarila, Niresh) to get this up. Only one that seemed to work was Niresh Mojave (which was version 10.14.1). Had to install as Legacy. UEFI would not work. Could not get the Samsung 860 Evo SSD to recognize to boot up without the USB installer in the USB drive. In order to get Catalina installed I had to manually update each Mojave update (10.14.2 and then 10.14.3 and then 10.14.4). After each install it would go to black screen. Had to reboot after each one and use the USB installer to get into Clover and choose MacOS Install on (computer name). Once that got setup updated to Catalina 10.15.3 from the System Preferences, Update pane.

Clover was setup with Legacy install. Was too much going on to remember the settings for it so that is why the EFI is attached here.

Have to go into BIOS and set it to Legacy on boot up and then save and reboot. Reboots perfectly fine without USB installer attached.

Have to go into BIOS and set it to UEFI with CSM in order to boot into Windows 10 with the Kingston NVMe 512gb SSD.

What is working: Audio (installed VoodooHDA 2.9.1 to System/Library/Extensions with Kext Utility Installed AppleHDADisabler.kext to System/Library/Extensions with Kext Utility Audio layout in Clover is set to ID 2

Ethernet Camera (using Function + F6 keys) Facetime (Through Ethernet until wifi card arrives. Will update then.) iMessage (Through Ethernet until wifi card arrives. Will update then.) All USB ports seem to be working fine. They are listed using Hackintool as: HS02 (USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C), HS03 (USB 3.2 (Gen 1 Type-A), HS04 (USB 3.2 (Gen 1 Type-A), HS05 (USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A). Don't think full speeds are there though but not really sure that is an issue either. Would be nice to have full speed on them. Brightness functions in Display settings works fine. Can't figure out how to work them with keyboard though.

Not working:

Battery Indicator.

Intel HD 630 Graphics. Doesn't show up in System Information and listed as Intel HD 630 CFL CRB 1536 MB. Graphics seems to work fine. No lag noticed. Youtube videos play fine with no lag.

Still get the black screen which takes about 3-4 minutes to get past once it passes the verbose screen. Can't figure out how to get rid of that.

Also need to why the Intel HD 630 doesn't show up in the System Information and need to verify if the Nvidia 1650 is disabled or not.

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

If anyone is interested I can upload a Carbon Copy Cloner image of my setup. Might help out if needed. Total size download is about 9.6gb. Can upload to Mega website for download. Just let me know. The image of course doesn't have the EFI folder but I have it uploaded to my repository.

Looks like it might be a few days before I get my Wifi card in to test it out. Once it is up and running will also update the EFI folder with the needed kext files for it. Getting the DW1820A which is supposed to work with Catalina for Airdrop, Facetime, iMessages, etc.

i have the exact same model. if you can upload the image then please do. mega has daily limit. would be better if you can upload on some other site. if you can't then mega is fine. thank you for your effort. i will definitely give it a try when i have some free time. all i need is android studio to work and i am able to use iOS emulator on it. that it.

What site would be good for you?

Edit: uploading to Google right now. Gonna take a bit. Will post when done.

I also got a DW1560 which is working perfectly fine also. Sidecar took a bit and found out I had to reboot my iPad for it to work. Airdrop, Wifi, Bluetooth, Sidecar working fine. Handoff... not so sure. never used it so trying to figure out how to. lol

Looks like it will email me for access once you ask for it. Not an issue. First time doing this with Google also. This is another account I setup specifically for this.

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

I hope you have more luck then me. I tried making a backup to another SSD using the image. Hell I even tried super duper and Carbon Copy Cloner. Even backed up the EFI and transferred to the new drive after and it seems to give me hell when trying to boot from it.

oscarrock commented 4 years ago

hey guys i have some free time today so i will give a try again, as @cm0270 did. I ill let you know how it goes. Im using same setup as the repo description says, im using a kingston sdd fyi.

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

Ok final setup includes the laptop and a DW1560 M.2 NGFF card which I got off Amazon for $49.99. Cheaper than others I have seen for that model. And obviously the last one that was available cause it now shows not available.

I tried the DW1820A but had too many issues trying to get it all to work so sent it back and got the DW1560.

Ok so I had hell redoing it on another drive to test it but managed to get it up... EXCEPT ONE THING... AUDIO.

THIS HAS BEEN THE ONLY WAY I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET CATALINA INSTALLED. I HAVE TRIED NIRESH CATALINA, OLARILA CATALINA AND TONYMAC VERSION. NO LUCK.

HOPEFULLY SOMEONE FIGURES OUT A MORE DIRECT APPROACH CAUSE THIS WAS A PAIN.

  1. Used Niresh Mojave (which is 10.14.1).
  2. Booted from USB. Once inside installer went to Terminal and changed the date by typing: date 030300002017. This let me do the installation. Formatted SSD to APFS and named it.
  3. Went through all the normal reboots, etc. where you had to use the USB drive to finish install.
  4. Upon install complete Wifi, Bluetooth, Airdrop and Battery status working.
  5. Tried to do install from System Preferences to update Mojave. No luck. Downloaded 10.14.6 combo update. No luck. Ended up having to download each update individually. Installed 10.14.2 and rebooted, etc with USB. All good. Updated using the 10.14.3 update. All good. Would not let me install 10.14.4 or 10.14.5 update without stopping at Kernal Stall (0) AppleACPICPU. So stopped trying to update.
  6. Went to system preferences and chose the Catalina 10.15.3 update. Took a few reboots but it finally installed. Working: Battery Status, Wifi, Bluetooth, Airdrop. NOT WORKING: AUDIO.
  7. Tried to recreate the steps with installing Clover Bootloader in Legacy mode. Would not boot without USB.
  8. Copied over EFI folder from original install on 1st SSD. System would now boot without the USB attached.
  9. NOT WORKING: AUDIO. Even though I copied everything over from original EFI from good install I cannot get the sound to work. Nothing has changed, etc. Same exact files from the original EFI folder. Not sure why this is happening. Original install included using VoodooHDA 2.9.1 and using Kextbeast to install it to S/L/E. Now with this retry of install and using the original EFI folder it is not working. Really weird.
  10. Intel HD 630 doesn't show up correctly either for odd reason. Shows as Intel HD Graphics CFL CRB 1536mb.
cm0270 commented 4 years ago

Sound now working. After all the BS involved I tried to remove the AppleHDADisabler.kext from S/L/E and it wouldn't. So used terminal and typed:

sudo mount -uw /

and then typed:

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDADisabler.kext/

and rebooted. It didn't remove the kext but now sound is working.

Don't ask me why this thing is being so damn finicky but everything seems to be working fine. Even though the graphics say Intel HD Graphics CFL CRB 1536 mb instead of Intel HD 630 I do have full acceleration it seems. Chess game plays fine with no lag. Screensavers are working (which from what I read that means acceleration is working).

The only issue I still have is a black screen for about 2-3 minutes upon rebooting/starting up. Sometimes it does it and sometimes (rarely) it boots right up and shows the Apple Logo screen with moving status bar then right into Catalina.

So now it seems everything is working fine.

Working: USB ports Wifi (DW1560 M.2 NGFF card) Bluetooth (DW1560 M.2 NGFF card) Airdrop (DW1560 M.2 NGFF card) Sidecar with iPad (DW1560 M.2 NGFF card) Sound Graphics acceleration Battery Status

I am still gonna mess around with this thing and see what else I can figure out with the easier install. All of this has been done using a 2.5 SSD and keeping the main NVMe drive as Windows 10. I have a spare Samsung 960 M.2 250gb that I am thinking about using because it is much faster (3200/1500 speeds) than the Kingston NVMe drive which is only 1000mb.

Good news guys i got my mac runing on catalina with a vanilla setup based on @cm0270 setup. Thanks dude!. I will update the efi folder and a brief description of what i have done. We have still need to patch the battery because it drains very fast. Also need fan control and other stuff to properly setup this laptop.

Oh please do. lol. I had living hell getting it done a 2nd time. lol. A vanilla install would be great.

I am definitely not familiar with patching the battery so hopefully we can get that done along with the fan controls.

And thanks again. Glad we getting this mess figured out.

BTW... Did you install it on the NVMe drive or do you have a secondary 2.5 HDD attached to your laptop like I do?

Nice. What were the steps you were able to get the Vanilla install done? And what version of Catalina did you use? Olarila, Niresh?

Ok wifi card working in windows 10 now with the drivers from here. Bluetooth... eh that is another story. Will have to figure that out.

Thought my card was BCM4360 but it was BCM94352Z DW1560

oscarrock commented 4 years ago

@cm0270 the installer was downloaded from the Mac App Store. Catalina 10.5.1

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

Ah ok. When I download from the store it only gives me the 10.15.3 version.

cm0270 commented 4 years ago

My system information. As you can see... no video cards showing. Weird. But everything else is. Just the issue with the battery indicator disappearing which is weird. Worked before and now its not. Same thing on the backup I did but now it works on there. Tired of taking this bottom off this laptop. Not the hardest but the not the easiest to do either.

And this is with a Dell DW1560 card. BCM94352Z DW1560

@cm0270 try it!. I updated the EFI folder. Definitively you shoud use the one i just push. Its working near perfect. Heat is gone!, No freezes, no crashes, battery is going slower. I am sooo exited!... Xcode, iOS simulators running my react apps REALLY FAST, this is crazy. I should give a rest to my imac 2014 now.

Your quote you put in your Readme. Please do a step by step if you can. lol. Would appreciate it.

I´ll make an step by step for myself and anyone interested in this.

CRAP!! meant to ask. Did you do Legacy or UEFI setup? And what options on the Clover setup did you choose? I would prefer UEFI if possible instead of the Legacy I got going. lol.

Yup copy and paste of your EFI folder didn't work for me probably cause I am on 10.15.3. I will have to go down to 10.15.1 and see what it does. All I get is a blinking cursor at black screen upon boot. Hmm..

@cm0270. I use UEFI. Also i have updated the config.plist becouse it had a timeout 0 so you couldn't see the clover menu. I recommend you to disable check ACPI/plugintype (Clover gui) and remove the patched files in EFI/CLOVER/ACPI/PATCHED ... i think that patches applies only for my laptop model, and you have a different one. If you have freezes you should upload the boot log to see the error. Otherwise its imposible to tell.

i have never installed hackintosh, i have two ssd as well. so hoping to do dual boot. as i need windows as well. can someone point me to a good guide for dual boot config. also which version will be good for me. @cm0270 seems to have exact same laptop model. msi gf63 this 9sc, can you recommend hackintosh version that i should use? maybe share link if possible so that i don't download wrong version. i have few days holidays coming up soon. will try to dual boot then. i have experience with dual boot of windows and linux(various linux versions).

@oscarrock

I have no idea how you are using UEFI. The only way I can get it done is with Legacy chosen in BIOS. If I choose UEFI or UEFI with CSM it won't recognize the hard drive when I hit F11 to choose boot device.

Guess more specifically... how did you create all the files you have in the ACPI/Patched folder? I have no idea how to do that mess with IASL, etc.

Helpful issues:

  1. Step by step on creating the installer and installing Clover to the EFI of the USB and what options to choose. Format option of USB, etc. I know you are using 10.15.1 but I cannot download that one. Only 10.15.3 for some reason.
  2. What settings exactly in the BIOS to use. Mine is BIOS, not UEFI but there are boot options for UEFI and UEFI with CSM.
  3. Any steps after install to get everything working (how to enable Intel HD 630, etc).

I kept trying different options and keep coming up empty on it for some reason. Every way I try the 630 doesn't work, battery status issues, etc.

Thanks

  2. I got 10.15.1 downloaded few months ago. I do not now if this setup works in 10.15.3
  3. I uploaded screenshots of my bios setup.
  4. The setup for INTEL HD 630 its on config.plist (CLOVER : DEVICES INTELGFX AND PROPERTIES - GRAPHICS - INJECT INTEL CHECK).
  5. You will have to make adjustments to config.plist becouse you have a different laptop hardware from mine.
  6. Do not use patched files just remove them Wish you luck

@oscarrock

Would it be possible to upload the Install app you have for the 10.15.1 version of Catalina you have? I think the main issues I might be facing also are in the .3 version of it.

If you can, if you don't mind that is. I know it takes a lot to compress it and the time spent to upload it to a site, etc. Just thought I would ask.

The setup for INTEL HD 630 its on config.plist (CLOVER : DEVICES INTELGFX AND PROPERTIES - GRAPHICS - INJECT INTEL CHECK).

I have tried many settings for this mess with no luck. I am going to take your config.plist and mine and open them in Plist editor and compare them and see. I know there will be differences of course which is expected.

Did you generate all of the files in your ACPI/Patched folder such as the SSDT's or did you find someone who had same setup and used those? I was just curious because I have no clue how to deal with that mess.

Did you generate all of the files in your ACPI/Patched folder such as the SSDT's or did you find someone who had same setup and used those? I was just curious because I have no clue how to deal with that mess.

For catalina 10.15.1. You can find it in apples official site: https://support.apple.com/downloads/macos

Its better for you that you use the last working config.plist and move on from there.

The ssdt patches its for experienced developers, but do not pay attention to that yet. the first goal is to install the OS. then you can upload your EFI with your ACPI files to a forum and ask someone to help you with those, in order to patch your specific hardware or you can go back to niresh in case you cant install a vainilla
