How do I update the cache directory from timthumb version 1.19, so that I can 
establish the size of allowed saves before purges?

I copied and pasted the new timthumb version 1.19 and the image files in my 
cache folder are doubling everyday.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.19

The cache size was increased from 250 to 1000 - you can edit this in the 
defines at the top of the script
