I think there is a problem in simply displaying the number of apartment buildings as 101, 102, 103, etc. Overseas postal codes appear first in the search bar even for 101 million places. In real life, it is called A Apartment 102, not a number. Considering the search engine, do not attach only numbers, but write dongs like 101-dong, 102-dong, 103-dong, and 201-dong to make it easier to find them. It is marked as such on Naver Maps and Kakao Maps, but the dong is always attached.

2 points were raised by @depth221 :

  1. In most cases, "name=101" or "name=101동" are used in terms of the 'name' of apartment buildings. According to the wiki, if there are multiple sections of a single building, or if there are multiple buildings within a single complex, you can tag each area/building with an addr:unit tag [1]. On the other hand, the addr:flats tag is used to indicate multiple household numbers (e.g., addr:flats=21-40)[2]. In fact, the apartment dong/ho is closer to a part of the address system than the name, so why don't you use the addr: series tag to indicate it?

  2. Although there is no "동" on the wall of the apartment, the official name is "101동", so I think addr:unit=101동 would be better than addr:unit=101. In addition, the addr:unit tag can be used not only for dong, but also for the building's area name (section A, section B, etc.).

My comments were :

  1. I like the idea of using addr:unit. Maybe we can keep name=101, but use addr:unit in top of it

    • But we might want to put the whole complex name under name instead (like : name:ko=
  2. For using 동 or not, we can have the idea of using addr:unit:ko tag key. While I don't see any localization used in this tag (like in the "name" tag for instance ), I think that can make sense to have addr:unit=101 and addr:unit:ko=101동

    • At the end of the day, when writing an address, we don't necessarily put the 동 in English, and using both tags can reflect that.

Also, wanted to link here the wiki we need to update once a decision has been taken :

As a name tag in Korea contains a Korean name, so how about tagging like addr:unit=101동, and addr:unit:en=101 or addr:unit:en=101dong? In fact, other countries also tag their addresses based on their own address system, and they don't really consider other countries' address systems.

Very good point, let's do this.

Here is my suggestion then according to our discussion : osm-appartments-korea

It's made using Excalidraw will put the source file in the repo if you want to complete it. Few comments then :
