Good spot - happy to email them "representing" OSM Scotland or there is an official OSM UK organisation. OR feel free to represent OSM Scotland yourself. and let use know here.
Now I log into twitter on the OSMScotland account after a few busy days I see that they are using OSM already, but worth getting in touch. Hopefully we can engage and work together a bit more.
I've sent them an email as myself, asking for info on the project but also mentioned OSM and Strava's heatmap.
Do you have a link to any of the twitter conversations? I did notice someone talking about the lack of core paths marked in OS - though in fairness to OS, not all core paths have actually been developed!
There should probably be consideration given as to how core paths are mapped in OSM. (I've seen a few incorrectly with "core path xxx" as their name)
The designation=core_path (and cp_ref) tag has been used, similar to England's public_footpath system - that could be used to help render them on a custom map.
I also noticed someone has put all the East Lothian core paths together in a relation: https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/11240340
This is probably the main thread I've spotted: https://twitter.com/MikeRSpencer/status/1302150188396576769
From the Director of Ramblers Scotland "OSM has been a vital resource for this project & there is no doubt it has the most complete public map of Scotland's paths that is currently available"
I got a reply to my email, saying: "We have been using OSM in our pilot areas and we’ve also made contact with OSM to discuss the project further."
and "The final goal for the project is to release the dataset we create as open data, I expect that there will be an interactive map on our website but the intention is for the raw data itself to be downloadable so it could be added to things like OSM."
Which sounds good. Wonder who they got in touch with at OSM?
I've not seen anything going to the CWG at OSM foundation, maybe someone from OSM UK knows, I've dropped a message to talk-gb.
Seeing as there was no answer to the talk-gb message - I replied to the Ramblers asking who it was they got in touch with and they said:
"I’m not sure exactly – the OSM Scotland account approached us on twitter and a colleague responded. It’s on my list to follow up further and arrange a proper catch up with them." [from Luke, the project manager]
Didn't know where else to put this so that the Scotland community could see it (mailing list is basically dead!)
I noticed Ramblers tweeted out a video and info on a mapping project: https://twitter.com/ramblersscot/status/1301453518038085632 - there's also a page on their website: https://www.ramblers.org.uk/mappingscotlandspaths
It mentions an hidden paths and gives an example of a core path to Duncolm Hill, but looking at the area it seems like it's been mapped in OSM for years: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/55.9588/-4.4523
I will email them in a personal capacity to get more info and find out what they are planning. However it does say "if you’re part of an organisations with path datasets, it'd be great to discuss how we can include them in the Mapping Scotland’s Paths project." - is there someone who could contact them representing OSM Scotland?
Would be good to get access to their dataset to improve OSM, and likewise to let them know about OSM (and Strava's heatmap) to help them find new paths.
