Display the current street name when using Android Auto #18857

Describe the idea (required)

If the Street Name widget is present in the Driving profile Top or Bottom panel, your mobile device (phone) displays the street name. However, Android Auto does not display it in the car's media display screen. It would be very helpful if it did display it (at least, at a minimum, if the widget was present in the Bottom panel).

Note: I emailed OsmAnd Support (request 54939) and they confirmed the function to display street names on the car's media display screen via Android Auto is currently unavailable within OsmAnd. Very few navigation apps I've looked at seem to have this function. Having this function could help put OsmAnd ahead of other apps.

Note: I use Android Auto. However, this proposal may also apply to iOS users.

Tell us about the expected behaviour (required)

I don't have good vision or good focus and find it hard to read street names on the car's media display screen that are in varying positions, varying angles, varying font sizes, and that come and go as the car moves. Zooming in helps but even close zoom is not enough. I also like to know the current name so that I know where I am when just driving around (in free ride mode) and when navigating to a destination. This gives full context to the current position.

What I would like to happen is for OsmAnd to display the current street name in the map on the car's media display screen when using Android Auto as follows:

  1. When the Street Name widget is present in the Driving profile Bottom panel. My suggestion is to not display ii if it's in the Top panel because the Top panel is by default taken by other functions.
  2. In a fixed position for quick, easy, and safe focus. The possible bottom positions are left, centre, or right. Any would work as long as the position is fixed. My suggestion is in the bottom just below the car icon (left or right closest to the driver's seat position).
  3. All the time when the Street Name widget is present in the Driving profile Bottom panel. My suggestion is all the time, when using both (1) "Free ride" mode and (2) navigation mode (to a specific destination), because I think it's always helpful to know the current street name.
  4. So that the street name is quick, easy, and safe to read at a glance. Meaning that it is always displayed horizontally and that the font size, colour, contrast, background, and other text elements make it easy to read by people with both good and poor vision. Making is zoomable would be good too.

The following screen is from the Magic Earth app. This app most closely shows the proposal. Although I think ME only shows this when navigating to a destination (not in "free ride" mode).

Tell us about alternatives you've considered (required)

OsmAnd doesn't currently do what I'd like so I've investigated numerous free and paid navigation apps from the Google Play Store and so far found none that do. Which means I'd rather see it in OsmAnd because of it's many other excellent features.

The only navigation app I've seen that does what I'd like is on a Toyota Yaris Cross (owned by a family member) but that's not helpful for everyone.

We've got plans to incorporate additional widgets specifically designed for Android Auto in our upcoming releases. Your request has been acknowledged and is in the pipeline for implementation.

That's great. Many thanks for your quick reply.

Is there any possibility of this coming? I would honestly say this goes beyond "nice to have" and is pretty mandatory for navigation functionality. Other apps like Organic Maps support this so it does not seem to be an Android Auto issue but an osmand issue.

I much prefer osmand for hiking and biking due to the tracks functionality and would rather not need to download two sets of maps.
