Add Areas-of-Interest (AOI) to the base map style #5895

Areas-of-Interest (AOI) convey visual information to a user where there are areas are of "high interest" regarding shopping, eating, accomodation, sightseeing or leisure.

We're working on a country extracts of such AOI (see https://github.com/geometalab/aoi-osm/issues/7 ) and I'm offering this dataset also to OsmAnd.

How could this be integrated technically?

P.S. @vshcherb / Viktar: We only met shortly at SotM 2018. I could have asked you there directly. Next meeting at FOSS4G in Dar?

Technically all data which could be represented in OSM format could be displayed with special styling. It should be straightforward and shouldn't require any app change itself. I'm planning to go FOSS4G conference though not the next one.

The original format we offer is GeoJSON (see e.g. Switzerland https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.892644 ). So are you recommending to convert this to OSM XML format in order to display it in OsmAnd?

It should be straightforward and shouldn't require any app change itself.

There are following use cases I have in mind:

  1. A user wants to easily add all AOIs of a country as background layer
  2. AOI show up as map source in the map management of OsmAnd like "Sea Map" or "Other Maps".

Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

P.S.

I'm planning to go FOSS4G conference though not the next one.

Next FOSS4G will be end of august 2019 in Bukarest https://2019.foss4g.org/
