Improve Who uses OpenStreetMap? #13

Open mikelmaron opened 5 years ago

Continuing from here focus on improving https://osmfoundation.github.io/welcome-mat/about-osm-community/consumers/

We need a more global and focused list, without over complicating. The intention is to highlight well known organizations that use OSM with a cross section of examples. This could possible for example, include all corporate members and some number from each region.

Hard. The selection process is very difficult. Probably not representative and finally unfair. Once it is done, the page is frozen and the first chosen names stay.

A long-term solution might be to have some complication on the other end, but that the selection process is automatic/randomised:

I like this idea to have some shuffling. Would take someone to coding. Presentation as something besides a long list would work better -- something more visual. Goal of this page is to really impress the high level of usage of OSM.

We made the lists alphabetical, which should make it less seemingly geographically weighted.

Closing this for now. Can reopen based off a specific suggestion, or better yet a PR

More feedback from the mailing list

Just want to mention that the Electronic map service, Tianditu, operated by National Geomatics Center of China, also uses OpenStreetMap like the way Baidu maps do.

Maybe you can add it to the list, and here is the link http://map.tianditu.gov.cn

More feedback from the mailing list

I would like to see a separate category "Companies offering OSM-based services and products", so we can move Mapbox and Telenav out the the "Companies" list, which is supposed to contain "Big" companies. We could then also add e.g. GeoFabrik, OsmAnd, General Magic (Magic Earth) and the like.

And of course it would be nice when we show a more global list of companies. But of course, by limiting to "Big" companies the chances are small to list companies from all continents. BTW, right now it's not clear what we mean with "Big" companies.

Another possible improvement would be a page (similar to https://community.osm.be/ ) to allow companies to get in touch with local communities via the preferred communication channel of the community.

You could also include in the list the Stockholm Public Transport - SL: https://sl.se/en/ It is one of the best and useful websites I ever saw. I've been at Stockholm couple of ears ago and I used this website daily to move around the city, the same as millions of other commuters.
