5 years ago In the U.S., the issue of similarly named chains is more prevalent with banks than with other kinds of POIs because banks do business under state law. Unfortunately, the index only allows specifying which country a brand appears in, not which country subdivision.
Several banks are named People’s Bank in English. Wikipedia lists a few, but the list is incomplete, and there’s a long tail. For example, I recently stumbled upon a branch of People’s Bank of Kentucky. That bank has only nine branches, so I wouldn’t’ve ordinarily thought to add it to the index. However, iD suggests this Washington State bank when typing in “Peoples Bank”, so unless we take care to add all the banks by this name, mappers may inadvertently tag the wrong
brand:wikidatavalue. There’s no way for the mapper to know that the brand isn’t the one they’re mapping. Or is this a case for treating “People’s Bank” as a generic name?
