Shell recharge #9276

Spotted on OSM community forum.

EV chargers from shell are branded as Shell Recharge. They also work with other business (workplace, retail, hotels etc) to install chargers at the sites. The brand they use for their business to business activities is "Shell Recharge Solutions"

It is this second name that appears as operator in the naming index. Instead I believe the naming index should use "Shell Recharge".

P.s. the actual company name various by country. In the UK it is "Shell EV Charging Solutions UK Ltd."

P.p.s. I'm assuming the maintenance and operation of the EV charger continues to be via Shell for both Shell direct to consumer sites, plus shell business to business "solutions" installations but this isn't 100% sure.

I'd be happy to drop the "solutions" text, as even if some Countries brand / label the charger as "Shell Recharge Solutions", I think "Shell Recharge" on its own would still clearly highlight which brand / operator it was.

Would this be best moved from the operator tree to the brand tree however? Do Shell operate all these chargers themselves?

A quick search on their map suggests that they can have different operators. A move from the operator to the brand tag is the best way forward here.

Came here because I ran into this issue again. 😄

I'd be happy to drop the "solutions" text, as even if some Countries brand / label the charger as "Shell Recharge Solutions", I think "Shell Recharge" on its own would still clearly highlight which brand / operator it was.

Maybe a silly question, but "why not both"? As in: for some objects, Shell Recharge is the right answer, for other "Shell Recharge Solutions" might be. The main issue that originally caused me to address it in the community topic linked above, is that when a charger get's added and correctly tagged, the ID validator suggests something is wrong with it - which in turn might cause inexperienced or sloppy editors to change it for the worse. But if I understand things correctly, entirely removing the "Solutions" version might result in the same thing the other way around (e.g. suggest the version without Solution where it actually should remain so?).

Would this be best moved from the operator tree to the brand tree however? Do Shell operate all these chargers themselves?

This might differ per country, and actually does differ per situation. I've found that in The Netherlands they use Ubitricity as operator for street side charging facilities, which is actually yet another Shell Brand just for that purpose according to the website, but Shell Recharge (without Solutions) for their Fast Charging stations. I can provide an example of both as required. So it should probably be present in both the brand and the operator tree.

Does that help move this forward @UKChris-osm or is there other information that would be required? Cause if so, I'll happily try to provide it. 😊

Not a silly question at all. Both could be possible, and may be the best way to go, but may also require a little more work in ensuring each area is assigned the correct name.
