https://blog.openstreetmap.org/2023/01/04/reminder-call-for-feedback-on-the-data-model/ linked https://github.com/osmlab/osm-data-model/discussions/9

Presumably users are expected to make new threads? But maybe make it more clear as "This conversation has been locked and limited to collaborators." is confusing to some

What you here think about change the call-to-action button "Join the Discussion" from https://blog.openstreetmap.org/2023/01/04/reminder-call-for-feedback-on-the-data-model/ to point direcly to https://github.com/osmlab/osm-data-model/discussions ?

Those who don't know GitHub can really get confused. And for some people how to know (but not that do exist "Discussions" as alternative with more features such as translation to "Issues") can also get lost.

@joto have you locked that post or someone else?

joto commented 1 year ago

@matkoniecz I have. Because that's a welcome message und people should start their own threads for own topics. It doesn't make sense to have everything in one topic.

This Github repo was always only intended as a place to have at least something where preliminary discussions can take place until we have set up a better process how to handle comments and have a structured discussion about this topic. Unfortunately somebody created the mentioned blog post asking for a wider discussion before putting some kind of system in place that could actually take those comments and channels them into something useful. I wasn't involved in that but unfortunately I am the admin of this forum, so I got stuck with it and I don't have the time. Please ask the EWG to set up some process if you want this process to go anywhere.

Can you mention it explicitly in https://github.com/osmlab/osm-data-model/discussions/9 message? Apparently multiple people ended confused by the lock message.

Something like "Please create new thread with a feedback or comment in existing one at https://github.com/osmlab/osm-data-model/discussions"

I've updated the link in the blog post to point to the discussion space as a whole rather than the locked welcome post, as this seems to confuse people.

Of course, this doesn't address address the larger concern that we need a process to organize these discussions and guide them towards a tangible outcome, as well as someone to conduct that process.
