@FIN-JBarile @Dengaloo @jhpoelen Today (September, 6th), we had a nice discussion of this issue on Skype. Actually, the bridge between FishBase/SeaLifeBase and Ecopath considers habitats, depth ranges, body sizes and high orders (sharks, rays, etc.) to define functional groups. In our shared Dropbox folder entitled "RESTORE Act project", there is a spreadsheet entitled "FUNGROUP_ESTIMATE" (also attached here). The "FunctionalGroupDefinitions" tab of the "FUNGROUP_ESTIMATE" contains the information that is used by the bridge between FishBase/SeaLifeBase and Ecopath to define functional groups for an Ecopath model.
It was decided that the information contained in the "FunctionalGroupDefinitions" tab of the "FUNGROUP_ESTIMATE" will also be used by the bridge between FishBase/SeaLifeBase and OSMOSE to define functional groups for an OSMOSE model.
However, note that the bridge between FishBase/SeaLifeBase and Ecopath provides a very long list of functional groups to the user, that is being established based on habitats, depth ranges, body sizes and high orders (sharks, rays, etc.) AND the different families that inhabit the ecosystem of interest. ==> We want bridge between FishBase/SeaLifeBase and OSMOSE to provide a much shorter list of functional groups to the user, based only on habitats, depth ranges, body sizes and high orders (sharks, rays, etc.) . ==> For instance we do not want the FishBase/SeaLifeBase and OSMOSE to define two functional groups called "pelagic-oceanic Rhincodontidae" and "pelagic-oceanic Cetorhinidae", but only one functional group called "pelagic-oceanic sharks".
@FIN-JBarile @Dengaloo @jhpoelen During our Skype meeting of August, 29th 2016, Skit asked how "functional groups" should de defined by the bridge between FishBase/SeaLifeBase and OSMOSE. I think that the definition of functional groups for an OSMOSE model should be pretty similar to the definition of functional groups for an Ecopath model by the bridge between FishBase/SeaLifeBase and Ecopath (Information by Country / Island -> Uses -> Ecopath data; example: http://www.fishbase.org/Ecopath/EcoModelList.php?tag=2&ht=&ft=&vc_code=840&vareacode=31), except that the definition of functional groups for an OSMOSE model should integrate information about body size ranges. I guess that the bridge between FishBase/SeaLifeBase and Ecopath considers habitats, depth ranges and families to define functional groups. It would be great to get precise information on this issue from Deng during our next Skype meeting (i.e., on September, 6th).
