Water level is of critical importance to canoeing and kayaking. Stream and tide gauges are a common way to determine if a trip is viable. We should show these in the OpenTrailMap water trail view.
For USGS gauges, we can link out to the public webpage if the operator and ref values are present (example). In the future we could even query the public API and show the stream level in OTM.
As for an icon, I like the little disk wheel seen on the USGS National Map and similar topos. (I'm sure @1ec5 must know the name for this shape).
