when I built it I had the same thought. I like the idea in general but I'm concerned for one specific reason, support.
When we make it Genesis specific it means we can limit support to Genesis child themes, which generally means it will be easier to integrate.
It wouldn't be hard for someone to fork it and make it work for their non Genesis theme, and more power to them if they do, we won't have to support it if they do that.

Makes sense that it would be Genesis-specific seeing as it is a free plugin?
+1 Genesis only. As Nick said, someone can fork it and support it themselves if they want it to work with another theme.
Closing this, as it works for me. Just need to know the intent so I can answer the 5 people a day who ping me asking about the plugin. :-P
Just wanted to create this issue to discuss whether or not we plan to make this plugin theme agnostic when it comes to being released to the public on WP.org. (whenever that time comes)
