I also think this would be useful (for instance for installation on robot computers that don't really require a Gazebo/drcsim etc. install). For testing some issues with moveit planning I recently collected the atlas model packages and put them all in a single repo. This worked well, so there shouldn't be any problem in replicating this setup (See here: https://github.com/skohlbr/simple_test_atlas_moveit).

You need to install gazebo4 to use atlas_description because atlas_description is in drcsim. Description package contains just models and shold be independent of gazebo version. Cloud you release atlas_description as independent package from drcsim?
