NX1 OSD doesn't update/refresh on display #111

Hi all,

I'm really sorry to bother you about this ancient device, but I still use it every day. I love it. Lately though I've been having some trouble with it and, desperate for answers, I could only think of this place to ask the questions.

A few things are weird:

  1. When I turn on the NX1 the screen goes on, off, on, off, on and then stays on (green flickering light).
  2. The screen doesn't seem to update. So if I click menu, the menu opens but it doesn't update when browsing through the menu's on every click (does this make sense?). So I have to click down, down, up, up to hopefully see what's selected. I now know most of the menu items by heart and how many times I have to press down, right, up, ok... But it's very annoying.
  3. I don't have these problems using the viewfinder.
  4. The camera doesn't show the battery percentage. The battery icon is not shown in the display and when I navigate to the menu with bluetooth etc it just says 0%.
  5. When I connect the NX1 through HDMI to a TV, all of these problems disappear. I can navigate the menu's, battery shows the percentage again.

I've tried to do a factory reset, tried to get into the dev menu, tried to get it to remove the record limit using the script here (just to see if anything works), tried to reflash the firmware. Nothing works, and I don't mean that those things aren't the solution, they just don't work. I can't flash firmware, because the camera thinks the battery is empty. Flashing doesn't work while connected to a HDMI output. The dev menu doesn't work (key combinations do nothing) the firmware via PC doesn't work because it's not newer, so it won't flash. I did however manage to install NX-KS.

I'd love to save this camera. Is there anyone who knows what's going on?

Hi,

I don't have NX1, but I will try to guess. You should go over to dpreview.com and post question in Samsung forum as there are people that actually have and use NX1.

From what you have described it seems that you have a problem with the cable connecting the LCD to the board. This might or might not be a relatively simple fix, depending on your location. If you have skilled smartphone repair shops around you could check with them to see if the flat cable has detached or is broken. If it's losing contact due to bad solder (or connector, or whatever) they might be able to fix it. If it's damaged (or broken) you will have to change it. I don't know whether samsungparts service still operates, someone on DPR might know (they never shipped to my country so I never used them).

The issue with the battery suggests additional problems and I can't help you there. It's possible that there are additional bad contacts (they do develop in time, with use, temperature changes, etc).

Best of luck either way.

BTW, you might find service manual helpful, ask on DPR for it (I don't have it for NX1).

Thank you very much for the fast reply! I was 'hoping' it was a software issue, because it only happens to the on screen display. I'll head over to dpreview and ask there.

I'm a bit late to the game, but there are replacement parts available from China, like the NX1 OLED block at https://m.de.aliexpress.com/item/4000538907825.html
