What archive revision are you testing on? (See the revision number next to "An Archive Of Our Own: Extreme Alpha (rev. #)" in the header).

rev 733 What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. log in

  1. post story
  2. choose genre What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Currently the only choices are 'gen', 'het', 'slash', 'other'.

Not all fic is 'romantic' in nature, even with a pairing. Some fic contain more than one genre element.

If this is going to be a filter feature, there will need to be additional elements: hurt/comfort, angst, happy, etc.

Personally, I'd like to be able to choose something besides 'other' to represent my story, regardless of the sex of the characters being paired.

This is going to have to be a Content decision.

Labels: -Type-Defect Roadmap-Tag

To clarify, this isn't a required category and it's meant specifically for people who want to sort their writing/reading according to these options (we've added femslash, yaoi and yuri to the beta archive as well). If none of the tags describes your story, you don't need to use any of them.

There's also the whole Pre-slash, pre-whatever angle, too (and the tamer versions of yaoi and yuri: shounen ai and shoujo ai). But.

I think the original post above shows that "genre" really doesn't work as a label for this category. When I think of 'genre,' I think: humor, hurt/comfort, angst, mystery, adventure, fluff, etc. And that's the textbook definition. Using the term 'genre' to -only- represent the gender of the romantic pairing... is just plain unconventional and counter-intuitive. Call it something else. Or, include those other keywords and have it be a multi-select box.

I understand that somewhere along the line it was conceived that those genres, like 'adventure' and 'mystery' would be put in the Tag field... but those. are. genres. And they still can be treated as tags... they'll just be called something else in the intake field.

Continuing from this, b/c bookish hit the nail on the head, it's not a 'required' field, but it will be one of the more heavily used of the optional fields, b/c readers tend to seek out the 'genre' of fic they prefer. It will be used a lot for searches, thus should have additional options, and should be a multi-select box.

Alternatively, if we'd like users to be able to search by both 'genre' and 'pairing definition' (I can't come up with a good word for that), have a separate section for each. One entry field for the genre, using the traditional definition (h/c, humour, etc), another for the pairing type (gen, het slash, etc).

... potential labels:

sexual genre plot genre

or something along those lines.

I think 'Genre' is the wrong label for this and I propose we change it to 'Category'

humor, hurt/comfort, angst, mystery, adventure, fluff etc can all go in free tags.

With the new layout we've got relying on a set list of categories and one category per story, I think we're going to stick with the current system. Other options can always be added as freeform tags.
