Feature laziness with clean history #8

This is the same as feat-laziness, but with the intermediate steps squashed. This way the history shows only the changes that matter in the end.

It should be easier to review the commits separately. Let me know if you want another PR with squashed history later.

I fixed all of these, except the first, by revising history. See PR #13. (Did you lock down your comment on auto-formatters? Anyway, I did unalign everything.)
