Animal Treatment #6

Not sure what the best way of badging animal treatment as part of it all?

wvengen commented 8 years ago

I suppose data sources covering animal treatment would fit in the open data section. In NL there is, for example a vegetarian product ranking, a vegan product/brand list and an organisation ranking sustainability of food products which includes animal treatment (I'm currently involved with the latter). Some labels also give guarantees about animal treatment.

I'd love to collaborate on this one! Possibly also exploring directions like https://hypothes.is/ | https://youtu.be/QCkm0lL-6lc

Couple of people working on it also participate in W3C Social WG

A problem I've come across is within the dairy industry, where apparently investments have led to cows being milked several times a day, without time grazing 'naturally', resulting in very poor quality of life for the livestock. Whilst dairy will always have implications there is a scale between 'best' or 'good' practice, and commercial practices which devalue an industry through significant animal cruelty.

With chickens, we have 'free range eggs' which denotes an assertion of quality of life, at the point of sale, enabling consumers to make decisions about what they choose to support. This in-turn can be used to justify price differences between one product and another; as it relates to the way in which living things are treated as part of a food-supply-chain.
