Printed Post Up Designs #43

Could we add half letter handbills (8.5 x 5.5) that we discussed?

Also --I'm realizing there are a few semi-urgent events where I'd like to leave handbills in the next two weekends, is there some interim design we can use? (Reuse some portion from last year?)

garrying commented 6 years ago

Added the 8.5x5.5

I think the reusing parts from last year makes sense for now. Maybe we can do a quick turn-around with design tweaks in the next couple of days?

dcwalk commented 6 years ago

Hey @garrying I'm wondering if we disaggregate website stuff from here? I think we've motored along on that, but need to circle back on social media sharing, post ups, posters (and decide on printing)... (so lead up advertising) and then also day of advertising (in addition to buffers: Our Sponsors board, any signage for the day? etc...)

garrying commented 6 years ago

@dcwalk I've updated this task to capture the print designs, and split the presentation buffer to #68. I'm aiming to have something together for print post ups this week.

Also for social media sharing, do you have a sense of what we'd want to have? I think it would make sense to create a separate task/issue to capture deliverables for it.

dcwalk commented 6 years ago

Hey! I had a thought on this -- as we have ~FREE~ B&W printing can we take advantage of that + colour paper to neat effect, something like La Quadrature does?

Also @garrying after next week I'd be up for helping (and think it'd be nice if we imagined like a pamplet combo program inline, would it be possible for this (and I guess swag design) to share design files with like fonts and everything set up?

garrying commented 6 years ago

First pass on the post-ups. I crammed as much as I could in terms of contentβ€”I wonder if we could do some editing to help add more white-space and bump up some of the graphics. I was thinking about coloured paper! We'd need to do some looking, but I think we can find a matching accent and maybe some super vibrant ones.

8.5x11 (Thinking of doing alternating halves):

artboard 1 copy 2 2x artboard 1 copy 2x

8.5x5.5:

artboard 2 2x

5.5x4.25:

artboard 2 copy 2x

Sooooooooooooooo cool πŸš€ πŸŽ› πŸ“‘ πŸ›°

Copy edits (these should be pushed to the website, PR: https://github.com/ournetworks/ournetworks.ca/pull/45

Title Internet Yami-ichi throughout (cut that kickoff one)

Taglines Network field trips and Toronto's first internet yami-ichi -> Kickoff with network field trip and Toronto's first Yami-ichi Our main event, a weekend full of talks, demos, and workshops -> Our main event: a weekend full of talks, demos, and workshops Last 3 days are in-person, collaborative project sprints -> Last 3 days are in-person collaborative project sprints

Location Claude T. Bissell -> Semaphore Demo Room (or something like that, but moving ) and updating address to Room 417, Claude T. Bissell building, 140 St. George Street if possible

Would also say that adding some whitespace (by reducing the size of some elements?) would be great!

edit: Also, do we want to think about more registration details (e.g., "sliding scale registration, scholarships available"? or mention code of conduct ? on the handbill size down)

dcwalk commented 6 years ago

RE: printing, I can access v. small quantities of a palette of other colours but would suggest we select a narrow amount to print on:

@dcwalk Updated the previews in https://github.com/ournetworks/2018/issues/43#issuecomment-395999518 to reflect the new copy. I also added mentions of the COC on each prints, and sliding scale on the 8.5x11. Does that make sense?

RE: Paper, Accent, white, and goldenrod/hot pink sounds good. I'm kind of tempted to try out this pack from Staples: https://www.staples.ca/en/Astrobrights-Color-Paper-8-5-x-11-24-lb-89-gsm-Spectrum-25-Color-Assortment-150-Sheets-Pack-80933-01/product_2521072_1-CA_1_20001 Look at these colour names! screen shot 2018-06-10 at 9 49 20 pm

They are pretty epic, so many greens! (Why don't we just do that then!)

--

Anyway final thoughts on copy:

  1. Change the Conf tagline to: A weekend full of talks, demos, and workshops
  2. Trim registration/coc lines to something like:
Sliding scale registration. Limited number of scholarships available.
Our Networks has a Code of Conduct.

But also I think we might be okay to remove the Code of Conduct, given its prominance during the registration, volunteer, and scholarship process.

garrying commented 6 years ago

Agree on removing the Code of Conduct mention.

Thinking about the stretch items: I have ideas for a sick A0 poster, but it'll take a bit of time to produce and we'd need to budget printing. We could translate it to 11x17, but I'd prefer to focus on the A0 format. It'll be more of a general 2018 poster than a post up.

Would it make sense to close this and make a new issue/task for the A0 poster stretch?

dcwalk commented 6 years ago

New issue makes a lot of sense to me @garrying !

And I wanna make this epic A0 poster happen, only thought is from my (limited) experience posters in that range are $50+ (more like $65-120 with taxes and depending on paper) per poster, whereas 11x17" I think is more in the 20-50 printed or silkscreened for a similar price. We don't have a budgeted that amt for printing that would cover that.

But, that is only academic poster printing and my previous Staples Copy Centre job talking. Also we can think a bit on the numbers (ofc!)

Anyway, we should make the stretch issue πŸ‘
