name: Proposal Submission about: Propose a session for Our Networks 2020. title: 'p2p Experimental Chatroom' labels: '' assignees: ''

Description

How might we begin to exit established forms of social media and the infrastructure of surveillance? p2p Experimental Chatroom is a study group that researches the nonlinear histories of micro-social-networks. For three days, we will explore playful and experimental ways of communicating with each another over the peer to peer network and present our findings to the community.

There is an option to follow tutorials and build your own p2p chatroom. This option is well-suited for folks with a beginner understanding of object-oriented programming in JavaScript, p5.js, or Processing (for example, comprehension on this tutorial series would be sufficient). For folks with no previous coding experience, I will provide a beginner-friendly template with annotations.

Type: study group + streamed presentation. The study group will meet for 90 minutes on September 9, then present our discoveries in a streamed presentation. Once the presentation is over, everyone is invited to join the chatroom we have created to participate in Q&A and further discussions on the topic. Length*: study group meets for 1.5 hours total, and the streamed presentation will be 30 minutes Date: the study group meets on September 9 and the streamed talk takes place on September 12 Duration: the study group meets one time; the streamed talk happens once; and the chatroom Q&A can go on for the rest of the day Language: the study group will be facilitated in English. And the streamed presentation will be in English at the moment, although this may change depending on the makeup of the study group participants

Objective

  1. The study group will explore different histories of experimental chatrooms and come away with a basic understanding of the peer-to-peer network infrastructure.
  2. The study group serves as an intentional space for the participants to experiment with alternative modes of virtual communication that might be difficult to practice in regular contexts.
  3. The participants may complete the study group with a copy of their chatroom design, which they may use as a seed to start their own micro-social-network.

Material and Technical Requirements

Technical considerations: 15 is the maximum number of participants for the study group. We will be using the p5.js editor inside the Chrome browser for the technical demonstrations (no installation required).
Additional considerations: N/A
