FOSS contributors work together publicly to build software projects. By building a diverse community of individuals with talents ranging from community organizing to software development, FOSS contributors create software in the open. By working together publicly, people can make innovative software changes with reach many users.
While we traditionally think of software development when discussing FOSS, the reality is FOSS contributors use a variety of talents including, but not limited to: user interface and graphic design, documentation, system administration, documentation, community management, marketing, usability testing to identify issues and report bugs, outreach and education, event organization, and translations. By combining these important talents, contributors build and maintain a successful FOSS project.
Contributors work on FOSS for many reasons. Some people work on FOSS in their spare time. Other contributors are employed by companies and non-profit organizations, including generous sponsors of this program!
Experience with FOSS is highly valuable in the professional world because employers can see public contributions and a history of collaboration that will give them confidence when making hiring decisions.
The first couple of paragraphs of https://outreachy.org/apply are very focused on software. They might make people who are looking for data science or documentation internships feel unwelcome. I think we can talk about what FOSS is without focusing too much on software, and instead talking about developing projects in the open.
