Emacs Live sets the backup dir to ~/.emacs.d/tmp/backups. Given that Emacs Live is packaged as a drop-in replacement for ~/.emacs.d perhaps it would make installing newer versions of Emacs Live "safer" if backups dir was set to something like ~/.backups.d.
