Seen with 2.4.2 daily and 2.5.0 daily as of 20180621:

Note, how the tray icon is next to invisible on light gray background of the KDE desktop.

How do other KDE application there do this? Is there some kind of color mask feature?

hasDarkSystray_private in utility_unix.cpp always return true. I guess that's because ubuntu's default is a dark system tray. But maybe one should return false for Plasma.

Normal linux (XDG) application just let the theme select the icon.

They don't have an option to use monochrome.
The default KDE themes (brezee and breeze-dark) provides an icon for owncloud so the normal icon looks good, but I think @jnweiger disabled it in the openSuse package (because of branding?)
One problem is that we use the same icon for the system tray and other part of the UI.
