Am I anywhere close to the mark? Too cluttered? screenshot from 2015-03-21 14 34 16 Is slightly overrunning the baseplate allowed for a 3d effect? screenshot from 2015-03-21 13 32 01

2nd icon would be fine if the eye wasn't popping put of the area of the icon.

1st icon.. definitively use other colors.

dehen commented 9 years ago

Haven't committed yet, just tooling around the KSP one.

For the CK2 icon, I had initially tried a tea-stain/antique look, but wasn't sure it fit the color design of the icon pack... which lead to the Hotline Miami style one in the OP.

Here's one with more muted tones, thoughts? screenshot from 2015-03-21 19 54 03

Made this, for xcom: screenshot from 2015-03-22 00 04 00 Source image: vigilo-confido_wide

Ok, lemme comment too: XCOM - looks nice, but can we see with dark blue instead of black symbols? KSP - Bit Frankenstein, but cute nevertheless. Good job! CK2 - I am incredibly lost with that one. @UriHerrera, any ideas?

dehen commented 9 years ago

dark blue looks better, you're right. The fold at the bottom comes through better. screenshot from 2015-03-22 10 24 39

The Frankenstein issue comes partially from the fact that Kerbals are oblong, so I'm sort of squeezing the hairline in since it doesn't fit the proportions. Here's one without a hairline for reference: screenshot from 2015-03-22 10 31 13 Also partially from the fact that they're muppet-frankensteins. lol: screenshot from 2015-03-22 10 30 24

The XCOM looks nicer with dark blue. Perhaps try with darker blue shade, though. I like the KSP Frankenstein icon better with the hair. :P

Nuclear Throne. There's so much great chapacter design to choose from in that game, but I went with Rebel, because the colors fit well with the theme, and because she resembles the early "bandit" enemies. screenshot from 2015-03-22 14 43 35

Now that we have Frankenstein and Mummy, we're almost ready to monstermash.

UriHerrera commented 9 years ago

I like the gradient of the first KSP icon better.

The CK2 could look better with a gray stone background instead and a shield with the cross and moon.

The static in the XCOM icon should be on top of the logo and the logo should be the blue of the background and the background should be dark.

dehen commented 9 years ago

I'll tear down the CK2 one, and try a different style later. Maybe something very simple in a stained glass style, as it's used in the game.

With the Xcom one... During the build I had attempted scanlines above the logo but it just plain looked worse. It tended to muddy the design, especially at smaller scales. Not positive what you're suggesting with the color design of it, but I'm cetainly not married to the color-balance. If you'd like to use it as a base, feel free to tweak it however you'd like.

ksp with updates, but original gradient: ksp

dehen commented 9 years ago

Not liking this one for EU4, it didn't turn out flat enough, Just throwing it out as a concept. I was going for the red/gold look of a lot of their widgets: eu4 eu42

one more super-rough draft before bedtime. Distance: distance

me4oslav commented 9 years ago

I quite like the KSP one, but perhaps move the left eye 2px to the right. I like the latest Xcom one one, but just make the blue tad darker. Nuclear throne - the eye looks meh to me. EU 4 - I like it, but doesn't the crown breaks the guidelines a bit? @UriHerrera? Distance - that white background really sticks out way too much. Also - beware with using letters and numbers, 'cause yu have to convert them to paths and with the path tool align them to grid manually.

dehen commented 9 years ago

Yeah. I'm ashamed of the distance one, and I'm reworking it. It was late and I must have been delirious... Even for a draft.

dehen commented 9 years ago

Also, I'll take another look at the guidelines when I get home. I looked them over, but my urge to jump in overcame me eventually.

UriHerrera commented 9 years ago

Yes since we don't use gradients like that. They're always bottom to top.

dehen commented 9 years ago

uh-oh, there are gradients in the kerbal eyes that will need to come out then. Or wait, that's just for the baseplate right? Baseplate gradient removed, I obviously haven't dropshadowed yet. Testing out an IV instead of a cross... for laughs.

dehen commented 9 years ago

More messing around, still feel like this one is too busy. Just a draft... screenshot from 2015-03-24 21 39 00

me4oslav commented 9 years ago

Yes, the gradients for the eyes for KSP should be grey to white bottom -> top and not right to left. Do that and move the left eye like 2 pixels to the right and it is ready to merge. That last distance icons breaks the gradient guidelines so much. Perhaps you can try something more like a road? I maybe wrong, though, game icons were never my cuppa. EU4 - I kinda like it more with the cross, but that maybe 'cause I've always associated crowns with crosses. I like the colours in the latest version. Can we see how it will look with those colours and a cross. Oh and I see horizontal gradient on the crown body. Is it doable to be vertical? XCOM - just make the symbol blue darker and it is ready to merge.

dehen commented 9 years ago

So confused, guidelines state "Both gradients (liner and radiant) and plain colours are allowed". Also, Kerbals are walleyed. I don't want to move the eyes together any further than I already have. I'm out.

UriHerrera commented 9 years ago

Sure they are allowed, but doesn't mean that you have to only use just one of those styles, we particularly mostly use linear gradients on the default icons so it'd be only normal that icons made by others would fit into that usage of the gradients.

As for the icons:

EU4: it's was better with the cross. XCOM: I still think it'd look better with the inverted colors. Distance: There should be other items in the game's GUI that make for a better icon. KSP: Just change the direction of the gradients. Nuclear Throne: Another character?.

crutchcorn commented 9 years ago

Sorry if I'm encouraging something that I shouldn't be but I just wanted to take a second and applaud @dehen thus far. These are all looking AMAZING (in my opinion) though the changes suggested by others would improve upon them
