This probably isn't the issue, it's probably just the background to the fiducial marker in general. Works when it's white (bland, consistent?) doesn't when it's not. Changing the marker detection mode might help this, or just going to have to accept as a limitation. If so, a full list of fiducial marker recommendations is probably warranted for whomever would use the software.
