The automate tool 
http://code.google.com/p/chromiumembedded/source/browse/trunk/cef1/tools/automat
e/automate.README.txt installs the depot_tools in the given download directory.

1) It would be nice if the automate tool first tried to detect if depot_tools 
are already installed on the system.
2) A new commandline parameter "--depot_tools_dir=directory to depot tools" 
would be nice to override any default or detected directory.
