I've been trying to get some new data ready for the database, and I think it'd be really useful to have a script that you could run on a netCDF file and it would just print out what metadata attributes were missing, and whether attributes with controlled vocabularies were using nonstandard options.

We do have a script, nclint, for just this type of purpose.

I am pretty sure none of the existing tests are exactly what is needed here, but it won't be hard to add a new test for this purpose. Do you want to take that on?
