Help wanted - trying to understand wind speed observations #220

I have downloaded wind speed data from the BC stations section of the PCIC data portal. I have found hundreds of stations in a few networks but, in order to know which field to analyze to be sure to be able to properly interpret the results, I need to know more about the characteristics of the wind speed data than I can find in the documentation or metadata records.

For the MoTIe network I have data records downloaded in csv format as wind speed (mean) and frequency (hourly). In those records, there five different column headers:

max_wnd_spd_10m_pst1hr MEASURED_WIND_SPEED1 avg_wnd_spd_10m_pst10mts ACTUAL_WIND_SPEED MAXIMUM_MEASURED_WIND_SPEED1

I need to know the averaging period of the wind observations in these fields.

For instance, is MEASURED_WIND_SPEED1 the 10-minute or 2-minute scalar average speed and is it ending at the top of the hour?

Is ACTUAL_WIND_SPEED instantaneous at the observation time?

Is avg_wnd_spd_10m_pst10mts the 10-minute average wind speed ending at the top of the hour and is it the same as MEASURED_WIND_SPEED1?

Are max_wnd_spd_10m_pst1hr and MAXIMUM_MEASURED_WIND_SPEED1 the maximum running 10-minute or 2-minute average speed during the hour?

The FLNRO-FERN network data records have two wind speed fields: WindSpeedms and GustSpeedms. What is the averaging period of WindSpeedms and does it end at the top of the hour. Is the GustSpeedms an instantaneous reading and is a observation at the top of the hour, or the maximum instantaneous observation from the entire hour?

The AGRI network has a few stations with daily (frequency) wind speed (mean). Is this observation a 24-hour average or a maximum of some other shorter averaging period during the day. Does the day end at midnight local or 06UTC like Environment Canada's climate day?

The BCH network has 9 stations near Fort St. John with wind speed (any frequency). What is the frequency and there is an error message that says 'couldn't download - network issue'. Can you advise?

It is a little disconcerting, not to mention cumbersome, to have to create a GITHUB account to ask for user assistance. Is there a PCIC email contact I can use for getting PCIC data portal help instead?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
