Router unresponsive after flash with custom firmware RT-N56U_3.4.3.7-075_dlna #1152

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Used web gui to update flash to RT-N56U_3.4.3.7-075_dlna
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Router unresponsive. Cannot connect to web gui (192.168.1.1)

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
rt56u - windows xp

Please describe the problem as detailed as it's possible.
If you have connection problem, then syslog file is required. (please do
attach it as a file)

I tried to put a custom firmware on the router (rt56u) specifically
RT-N56U_3.4.3.7-075_dlna and after finishing the flashing operation (the
message operation complete appeared on the screen). I waited something like
20-30 min and nothing happened. The router was unresponsive (i could not
connect with the web gui (192.168.1.1).
I used asus recovery tool with asus firmware 3.0.0.4.374.979 to bring the
router back to life.
Then I tried again to flash with RT-N56U_3.4.3.7-075_dlna and same problem.
Used again asus tool to recover.
Now im scared to try any more.

Did I do something wrong? Is RT-N56U_3.4.3.7-075_dlna the latest firmare for
my router?
Is there a walkthrugh for the flashing process?
Maybe i should have used the asus recovery tool to update to firmware
RT-N56U_3.4.3.7-075_dlna instead of the web gui ?
Should i try a different file?

Thank you

Micky

- Try to redownload the file with firmware. It may be corrupted.
- Yes, you can use the asus recovery tool to update to firmware
RT-N56U_3.4.3.7-075_dlna.
- I don't have any problems with flashing this firmware.

Can you ping the router after flashing?

Thank you for your answer.

I redownloaded the file and used Web gui to update the firmware to
RT-N56U_3.4.3.7-075_dlna.
It works now.
After i entered the settings and connected the wan cable i noticed that I
cannot connect to web gui anymore. The router is functioning properly though.

I did a test, unplug wan cable restart router and then i am able to connect to
web gui.

but with wan cable attached to the router I am unable to connect to web gui.

Is this a normal security feature?

Thx

Is it possible that WAN gives 192.168.1.* same ip and it conflicts someway?
Have you tried connecting http://my.router ? If it doesnt work, try changing
asus ip pool to 192.168.2.*.

Does your WAN box give NATted or straight ip to internet? If using wlan, sure
youre using asus wlan?

I connect to WAN using PPoE. If i do a tracert then i can see that my wan
provider gives me a NATed IP (10.0.0.1).

As for the connection to web gui I did some more test and it turns out that I
am able to connect to the router but it is very very slow. It takes about 5 min
to load each page after i click on the link. (im thinking maybe the packets
somehow get misdirected or something)

I find it very odd because with the factory firmware everything works like its
supposed to.

I was using a Linksys wrt54g before geting the asus and the linksys has a great
setting which i miss in the asus (the ability to disable wireless acces to the
router web based utility - gui. this way you could only connect to the web gui
with a cable). I think that this setting is very important.
I could not find this setting in the factory firmware and i figured maybe it is
available in the custom fimware and that is why i wanted to try.

I wonder if the disable wireless acces to the router web gui setting is
available in the custom firmware for rt56u

Thank you

Micky

What browser do you use?
Add you router's host to 'white-list' in your antimalware/antivirus
