This is happening to me as well, but not only on my iPhone (4S).
I have 2 notebooks here that connect at 2.4GHz (both use Atheros chipset if
that makes any difference), and often they display a yellow exclamation mark on
the Windows wireless console (no internet access).
I've found that disconnecting from the network and reconnecting fixes it (no
router reboot necessary in my case).
On the iPhone I have to disable WiFi and enable it back.
My other notebook is equipped with a 5GHz compatible Intel WiFi Link 5100 chip
and has experienced no such issues.
I'm using 1.1.1.8f-b8-2 but earlier version have had this issue as well.
Thank you devs for all your efforts :)

I had this problem too and went back to an older 1.0.1 version, which was
better but still showed occasional issues. So I went back to the latest Asus
version which required a hard reset, set everything back up and then realised
why I stopped using the Asus version in the first place. So I updated to
1.1.2.2-006, powered off/on, and so far (about 35 hours) it's been fine.

I may have found a solution. I'm based in the UK and had the wifi channels set
to 1-13. since ive switched this to 1-11 i've not had any trouble. Might be
worth trying that and see if that helps you as well.

Something defintely wrong with 2.4ghz. I'm on 1.0.1.8j now and it's got even
worse. As soon as I take mobile devices into the next room, I'm almost getting
nothing and sometimes it can't even connect to the router.
Never had this problem with 1.0.1.8d
It's just an absolute joke. Can't even use mobile devices upstairs now.

I have experienced similar problem as well on Android phone and laptop
computers. This is quite annoying since it looks as if devices are connected
but actually not, and for the whole day one will not receive any email or
Whatsapp on his phone.
What steps will reproduce the problem?
Phone & Laptop
1. Android phone has Wifi turned on before entering the router's wireless range.
2. Walk inside the wireless range of the router, see the phone is connected to
the wifi.
3. Open browser on the phone, it said it cannot connect to the Internet.
4. Turn off and then turn on the Wifi on the phone, it can connect to the
Internet.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
- RT-N56U_1.1.2.3-010_newgui
- RT-N56U_1.1.2.2-006_newgui
- RT-N56U_3.0.2.5-015_newgui
* However, official version from ASUS has no such issue. The version I tried is
1.0.1.8l.

I have a similar issue, but for me the 2.4 GHz doesn't work at all for some
devices. I.e., no amount of turning Wifi on and off will make it connect.
In addition, for the devices that it does work with, they have to be in the
same room as the router, which makes no sense because the devices report
excellent signal strength (~ -56 dBm) even when 3 rooms away.
I did some packet analysis and found that the 2.4 GHz side doesn't send Probe
Response or Association Response packets to the clients trying to connect. Yet,
I have no idea how to go about fixing this.

This is happening to me as well. Mostly with my Android phones and tablets
when using them (all 5 of them) they don't disconnect from the wireless, but
internet will stop working and I need to disable and re-enable wireless on all
the devices or in some cases, reboot the router altogether. Anything wired
will continue to work. When this happens, my notebooks also seem to not work
on the internet as well, again, they stay connected to the wireless, just no
internet. If I leave the wireless off on my smart phones, the notebooks stay
connected to the internet all day long without a hitch. Something leads me to
believe that something with the smart phones is fouling up the wireless to the
point where it doesn't want to share the internet, but yet stays connected
wirelessly.

Also wanted to note that this has been going on since I upgraded firmware a few
months back. I don't recall the issue happening on the original firmware that
came with the router.
It also seems to happen every time I enter the wifi range with wireless enabled
and sometimes just randomly throughout the day.

Yeah, but there's no point in using this router (or any 802.11n router for that
matter) if you're going to use WPA because the Wifi spec does not allow full
link speeds when anything but WPA2-AES is used.

I have experienced the same problem. I'm not sure if it has always occured or
not, because I updated the firmware very shortly after I got everything
connected. But I did update the firmware while the router was in AP mode. I
have had an improved experience ever since I reset the router to its factory
default settings, and then manually reapplied all of my changes (mostly just
enabling AP mode). Every once in a while the internet on the iPhone stops
responding, but it is much less frequent now and I don't notice it anymore.

I just recently purchased and set up this N-56U router as a update to my
Linksys. Right off the bat I updated to the latest official firmware from Asus,
I believe it was firmware version 3.0.0.4.334, running on Windows 7, 64bit.
Immediately noticed some issues with 2.4ghz radio just like everyone else.
Other than setting a WPA2 PSK, most everything else is on default. My cell
phone connects, but data speeds were terrible, my work laptop and second
desktop in the next room wouldn't establish a connection even though signal
strengths were great, it was as if I kept putting in the wrong password...
Anyways, I chatted with ASUS to see if they would be of help in diagnosing the
problem, but they were useless. I ended up figuring out that when connected
through the 5ghz radio, data transfer was smooth as butter, and when trying to
connect back to 2.4ghz, nothing. Then I changed the "Auto" channel setting to a
specific channel "8", and lo-and-behold, anything within range connected with a
smooth data connection. The problem now seems to be that the range is very
lacking for a router of this caliber (for example downstairs, or in a room a
bit further), I get similar problems to what I had originally had on "Auto".
(i.e. won't connect, terrible speeds).
So sorry for the long winded story/explanation, but if anyone would happen to
know, is this a Hardware issue? Or simply a Software/Firmware issue? Reason I
ask is because, ASUS said if I can't get it resolved, I can RMA for another
unit.
Thanks to you all in advance.

One more thing I forgot to ask, what firmware is everyone running? Am I running
on the wrong firmware or something? I know this thread is a bit dated, but it
seems most are running versions starting with 1.0.0, where as the current ones
are 3.0.0..
I don't need anything to technical or advance, just a stable daily router, so
which firmware would suffice?
TIA

Latest ASUS RT-N65U router (2*USB 3.0!) - same problem
All 5Ghz clients (ipad, laptops) work fine, all 2,4 Ghz clients (wdtv live, 2
iphones) cannot get a stable connection. 2,4 Ghz works if I would turn of
WiFi-security, which is realy no option.
measures (all useless):
- latest firmeware
- complet reset to factory settings and new setup
- same sid for 5 and 2,4 ghz or different sid's
This issue did cost me a lot of hours until now and I'm really pissed!

I had similar problems as above. Both my android mobile device and a mac mini
couldn't recognize the 2.4ghz channel, but could connect on 5ghz. I changed the
Region Code to USA (channels 1-11) and I selected a specific channel. I live in
the US and around our house the wifi spectrum isn't too crowded so I wasn't
that worried about leaving it on one channel. It seems to have fixed the issues
I was dealing with. I'm running the most recent custom firmware -

(tried with 2 different USB WLAN adapter). All phones can connect to the 24GHz
with no problem at all.
But using the laptops n desktop, it will grab the IP, but it just shows no
Internet Access. Even i tried to ping the Asus LAN IP oso can't get reply,
tried to configure static IP oso won't work. ON and Off oso no effect, already
flashed with latest firmware but to no avail too.

If you also have problems with iPhone or other "i" devices, you should choose
"USA" channels. Channels 12-13th (2,4Gh) are not available on these devices.
Anyway see device spec or try to find out what channels are supported for your
device first.

So I just got an RT-N56U (used) and I encountered a similar problem where the
2.4GHz wifi couldn't even be found by my phone, but the 5GHz one could,
although that one just won't connect. I fixed the issue with 2.4GHz by manually
setting the channel, as comment #41 suggested. Channel 6 and 7 (but not 13)
worked for me, although other channels may work, too. I've got Padavan version
3.4.3.9-093.
I am unsure if this is actually just a hardware issue or not (could be) because
when I tried the latest Asus firmware, the issue with 2.4GHz disappeared (don't
know about 5GHz, haven't tried it) and it worked fine.
I'm glad I found this solution for Padavan, though, since the Asus firmware is
still awful and buggy.
Btw, I am using a Samsung Galaxy S4 with Cyanogenmod 11 (Android 4.4.4)
installed on it. I've had other issues with my old router in the past, too; it
seems android is a bit picky about routers. Will report on other phones later
when friends visit.

Having this issue with firmware version RT-N14U_3.4.3.9-099_full.trx (device: Asus RT-N14U).
Channels are set to "Russia", channel is set to 5th.
iPad Air 2 with the latest iOS (as of Nov 6, 2016). After reboot - iPad is disconnected from Wifi and does not connect to previously active/selected Wifi network. After several manual attempts iPad connects back.
Will try to change channels set to "US" and switch using channel 6.
