I suppose this could use more composition instead of an entirely custom tab design

what if Tab supported icons? then this is nothing more than a vertical Tabs in a Dialog.

FWIW, unrelated to this issue: It's nice to see some of the components in use. I'm sure that's one of your internal apps, but it would be awesome to see some more complex examples.
