That does look like an RCall problem -- do you get the same error when you do using RCall
in Julia?
@bbolker would you be adverse to using a Conda installation of R to see if that fixes the issue ? If you run
julia> ENV["R_HOME"] = "*"
julia> using Pkg; Pkg.build("RCall")
it will auto-install R via Conda. I suspect that part of the problem is that you're using a dev build of R. (see https://juliainterop.github.io/RCall.jl/stable/installation/) Note that you don't have to remote the julia>
when copying and pasting sample code into the Julia REPL.
The next version of Julia has much improved support for handling systems where the local lib versions are newer than the Julia-bundled versions
I think it works now, except that it looks like I would like to go to my Conda version of R and install packages (I get "Error: lme4 not found"). Honestly, I'm not sure it's worth it for me to get over this hurdle at the moment, although I really appreciate the effort you've put in to helping me ...
I am absolutely clueless about this, but thought I would report it. This is on Pop!OS 22.04 (Ubuntu derivative), with Julia 1.8.2 (installed via
sudo apt-get install julia
), having successfully installedMixedModels
...I have a suspicion that it may have to do with having installed R in the "wrong" way (compiler flags, shared library, etc.) - vague memory of something like this happening before?
