Adding it to the specimen page makes things quite messy on the backend. I don't think it is impossible, and I agree that it would be beneficial, but I am going to leave this one up to @NoisyFlowers to decide long-term.
For Identified specimens, the multiselect was replaced by SpecimenManager (with search dialog) in commit 5170c80e07bca2cbaa17cae43a0af0fb4976941e on August 29, 2023.
This addresses (1) and (2) above. Andrew is correct, (3) will be sweaty.
Just putting a note that after using PBot, the issue of assigning a specimen to an OTU from the specimen form (#3 above) has resurfaced as very desirable from a user standpoint.
It could go in the optional fields accordion above the "identified by" selection. It would also help make the "identified by" field make more sense. Right now you have to designate who identified the specimen in the Specimen form, but assign the specimen in the OTU form.
Common OTUs may have hundreds of specimens attached to them as the database grows. Currently, the only way to assign a specimen to an OTU is the "Identified specimens" dropdown menu, which allows multi-select. This is problematic for several reasons. 1) The specimen list will get too long for the dropdown menu. 2) On attempting to add another specimen, it is easy to accidentally delete one already selected. 3) If a user wants to just enter a specimen and assign it to a well-established OTU, this requires them to first enter the specimen and then go to the OTU page to add that specimen to the OTU, which is not efficient.
It would be useful to be able to add OTU assignments from the specimen page (I know we've discussed this before). This could also ease the workflow of searching for many specimen numbers when we switch from the dropdown menu to the magnifying glass search.
