[x] Change the text in the header from “Each line in the table below represents a functional characteristic of a human gene that is supported by scientific evidence. You can filter the list to find specific genes and/or functions.” To “The table below shows functional characteristics of protein-coding genes that are supported by scientific evidence. You can filter the list to find a specific gene or function category. Functional characteristics are described using terms from the Gene Ontology, and describe three distinct aspects of gene function: molecular function, biological process, and cellular component.”
[x] Please add the chromosomal location of each gene to the “gene” column, and also add text with “View all functions and evidence” that links to the gene detail page. You can keep the link from the gene name to the gene detail page as well, but It will help users to also be explicitly told that there is more information available.
[ ] In the table, you try to use the icon to label direct or homology evidence. Except for the color and the letter "H" or "D", I don't get the meaning of the icon. You only need one indicator to show the difference. You can either use the red H and green D symbol, or the color shades of the cell, but probably not both.
[ ] You can remove the “filter by knowledge status” section on the left, and move the “filter by function category”box to just above the graph in the left panel (you can put it where the “click to filter by category” text is). If it’s possible to have the MF/BP/CC selection buttons take less vertical space, that would give more space for the graph, which should be the main focus of the left panel.
[x] In the graph, the counts should be genes, not annotations. Once the user has selected a category, you can just display the graph for the one selected category, and not any others. They will need to clear the selection to get the full graph back again.
[x] Change the text “Annotation results” to “Current selection”. You can put the number of genes next to the number of annotations, to take less vertical space and more horizontal space. You can remove the statistics for GO function aspect and knowledge status. The main statistics a user will be interested in is the number of genes in different function categories, i.e. the graph in the left panel, so I think this will be sufficient.
[ ] In the "Knowledge Status" graph, both show "Known aspect". It should be "direct evidence" and "homology evidence".
Change the tooltips for the new column headers:
[x] MOLECULAR FUNCTION column: “What a protein encoded by a gene does at the molecular level. Click on a GO identifier for more information about a GO term.”
[x] BIOLOGICAL PROCESS column: “System functions, at the level of the cell or whole organism, that the gene helps to carry out. Click on a GO identifier for more information about a GO term.”
[x] CELLULAR COMPONENT column: “The part of a cell where the protein encoded by the gene is active. Click on a GO identifier for more information about a GO term.”
Add a tooltip over the evidence icons:
[x] Direct evidence: “This characteristic has been demonstrated directly for the human gene. See all evidence.” Clicking on the See all evidence text should bring up the panel you had before that shows all the evidence for an annotation.
[x] Homology evidence: “This characteristic has been demonstrated for a homolog of the human gene. See all evidence.” Clicking on the See all evidence text should bring up the panel you had before that shows all the evidence for an annotation.
