Ability to transmit recorded data to opengts servers #120

We are looking for someone to modify "OSMTRACKER-ANDROID", to make it
multi-platform application (iPhone, Android all version ,BlackBerry,
WM7,Nokia)
that is used to record GPS inforamtion on the mobile device, and then transmit
it to servers. The key aspects of this project are:

1 - Simple, easy-to-use interface on the mobile devices
2 - Ability to run in the background
3 - Ability to store data on the device when there is no GPRS/3G/WI-FI signal
4 - Ability to send data over HTTP POST and also via a TCP connection to our
servers (opengts),(verification over HTTP POST and GPS tracking data over TCP)

using the source code of the below applications
http://android-opengts.googlecode.com/svn/aGTS/
http://code.google.com/p/open-gpstracker/source/browse/

The application (all platforms) must be able to handle sending data in compliance with the web services API and TCP protocol, plus it must be able
to handle the server-generated replies (e.g. ACK messages, etc).

There will be a number of settings within the application to control how often
data is recorded (i.e. how often a tracking log is
recorded) and how often tracking logs are sent (i.e. how often recorded
tracking logs are transmitted to the server). There will also be
username and password fields (for server-side verification), plus the
application will also use the IMEI number of the mobile device as
further verification.

The multi-platform things looks difficult to me as every platform uses
different technologies. That means basically restarting from scratch on every
platform (Except maybe BlackBerry, I've read somewhere that they'll soon be
able to run Android apps...).

However I don't really see the connection with OpenStreetMap ?
Can you tell us a bit more about Open GTS ?

platform,i:e ,blackberry

Hi,

as Nicolas already said, I don't see a connection to OSM (especially to
osmtracker-android), too.

OSMTracker for Android should help people to participate in adding data /
information (e.g. GPS tracks and tags) to OpenStreetMap.
OpenGTS seems to be a tracking software/framework to be used for fleet
management.
In my eyes the only connection between both applications is that it uses GPS
and can display some OSM maps. (that's - for me - not enough)
The background seems to be totally different...

Currently I don't see any chance to integrate this feature into osmtracker.
There are a lot of issues that need to be done before thinking about features
that do no belong to the main purpose of this app.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

BTW: since osmtracker-android is licensed under GPLv3 you are welcome to use
the complete source code to develop another application that is based on
osmtracker-android, as long as you'll respect the license.

best regards
Matthias

is it possible that the data stored in sim from osmtracker is send to the mysql
server through gprs, and can be displayed in a table form

As you said the purpose of the OSMTRACKER is to add data /information to
openstreet map but if all this information is send to the server database ,it
would be of great use in a form of reports and tables.

Hi Sanjay,

Maybe it is just me but the information you are posting here seems a little
vague.

I can understand that you can see value in passing the data to an OpenGTS
system or to the Enterprise GTS system but I don't see much value for the
target user of OSMTracker. Can you clarify?

OSMTracker includes a feature to export recorded tracks as GPX files. Perhaps
you can take these files and manually upload them to the GTS system?

As Matthias mentioned, you are free to use the OSMTracker code to build your
own enhancements, provided that these honour the terms of the GPLv3.

- Paul.
