Same question here. I’m renting a new vehicle that only shows an ESN, not a radio ID, and it doesn’t look like this is valid…
@DanITman did you ever find a solution for this?

Mind commenting the ESN? I'll try and take a look for ya :)

Yes, I got it working but I used a fork of this code for Go and it worked. It took a bit to get everything from this code base switched over to the Go version but it activated the ESN in that code base.
Thanks for the comments guys! I don't know what ‘Go’ is but I’ll see if I can find the fork.
@parker-stephens Cheers Parker; this car’s ESN is B665W65F952F. My upcoming road trip tomorrow will be much improved if I can get this working!

Not sure I can do anything for this one. It says there is a plan active, but it won't send the refresh signal because it is a rental car.
"Signal refreshes are not allowed for this rental car subscription. Contact your rental company for assistance or SiriusXM Listener Care if a subscription change is needed"
Hmm interesting! Well thanks for trying anyway. In future if I get another newer rental that has an ESN instead of a Radio ID, do you know is there a better way to try to activate it than the current tool?

@peanutismint I'm not sure. The app doesn't differentiate between Sirius IDs, XM IDs, ESNs, etc. They're all sent as a common "deviceID" variable which is then checked against SXM's database of IDs. The very few ESN's I've activated went through fine.

Go is a programming language. I used this repo: https://github.com/avarayr/siriusxm-activator. I had to do some configuring to get it to work but I was able to activate my wifes car.
I get the same reply on the ESN about it being a rental car:
"Signal refreshes are not allowed for this rental car subscription"
Thanks for trying; I wonder what designates them as rental cars because my own car back home is an ex-rental and I can still activate trials on that one. It is curious…. I get the impression maybe this ESN is like a newer, more advanced form of the Radio ID so maybe it has additional lockouts?

Its probably the rental car companies have a deal with them to determine when they are rentals so you can pay to have it active while you are renting. ESN is not new and is mainly the Ford / Lincoln version of a radio id. I think it might be an older carry over from sirius before they merged with XM (or the other way around)
Looking at the code, is there any way to submit ESN instead of Radio ID? ESN is only from old sirius radios before the merger and Ford still only uses ESN and not radio id.
