[DESIGN] Improvements to the Research Page #896

Open jesicarson opened 4 years ago

jesicarson commented 4 years ago

@Mattygryan will review https://participedia.net/research and give feedback.

May want to add a section for Participedia Data (and distinguish from "data repository" section, that could be confusing)

Discussion about producing a simple diagram to give people a better sense of the data model.

Also makes sense to publish the draft codebook and CSV downloads here ASAP with some explanatory text that they are a work in progress.

jesicarson commented 4 years ago

@Mattygryan is this sort of what you mean by visualizing the model? Screen Shot 2020-04-08 at 3 02 02 PM PS: I used Miro to quickly mock this up (collaborative white board tool - check it out)

This makes good sense!

@jesi i like this idea of producing a diagram to show the fields associated with each entry type. it would be great to create this diagram in code so that we can translate it. we could use the d3 library to create a chart like this: https://observablehq.com/@d3/collapsible-tree

I have added a section for data downloads, and I renamed the Data Repository section to Dataverse Repository for clarity.

Let me know if you have any suggestions or changes to this!

ascott commented 4 years ago

@jesicarson also, maybe we could write a short blog post to publicize the addition of these links and the existence of csv downloads on the site...

jesicarson commented 4 years ago

great ideas and updates to the research page @ascott. we've got a newsletter going out today/tomorrow which in part will publicize the data jam - I'll link to the updated research page and mention the availability of the csv exports as well.

jesicarson commented 4 years ago

it would be awesome to translate that diagram too! nice! it would be good to show that on the page to make it more interesting - or do you think a new drop down for "Participedia Data Model" that opens to reveal the chart is best?

ascott commented 4 years ago

i think the chart should be in the same Real-time Data Downloads section as it illustrates the fields related to that content specifically. i was wondering what you think about having those accordions open by default on desktops but closed on mobile/small screens... it's not a lot of content and it might be nice to see more content on first page load if there is enough screen space to do so.

jesicarson commented 4 years ago

@ascott yes to both - include chart in data downloads section, and default to open on desktop. thanks!

Mattygryan commented 4 years ago

This is super. Nice work! So many good ideas that clarify things for people coming at the site pages. I really think and hope this is going to help usability. Cheers folks 👍

Change "Methodology" heading to "Participedia Methodology" (lucy usersnap, sept 2020)

Draft some honest data quality text - work in progress, constantly improving, etc (old usersnap)

add the codebook (veronica - Nov 2020)

Add published papers by team/anyone about participedia / using pp data

Sender: lucy.parry@canberra.edu.au Comment: I think we need to get a bit meta and also pose on this page the question what kinds of research can be done with PPedia data, for what purposes, and with what caveats. https://github.com/participedia/usersnaps/issues/1142 image

Alanna suggested adding text above the graph: https://github.com/participedia/api/issues/931

SURVEYS Update for Research page

Per email thread with Mark, Pat, Matt, Bonny in March 2022 - Subject "RE: Questions about Participedia surveys" - I proposed the following:

A public sharing folder, containing sub-folders for each survey. This can be added to the research page under the Surveys heading. That paragraph text should also be updated.
