I looked into this issue; I think by default design principle, Docusaurus suggests each page of the document to be consecutive, just like flipping a book, so they didn't provide an option to disable the Previous/Next pagination buttons.
In the example you provided, it is confusing because the Previous button has title "Patterns", which makes people think that's navigating to a different topic due to the parent/child relationship. In this case, the title of that "Patterns" page should be "Preface" or "Introduction to Book of Patterns".
I think eventually, we will be using a customized theme. I will leave this issue open for now.
Required new component for this is a Customized Theme
As a new user, I am unfamiliar with the content, was confused by the previous and next buttons. Personally think, it is better to navigate to upper level (To previous topic and next topic). Or has more detailed text.
